ExperienceI worked for the Michigan State Writing Center for a year and a half as a writing consultant. I tutored a healthy variety of students - including freshmen working on WRA assignments, seniors working on their theses, and graduate students working on dissertations.
Currently, I am an Associate Instructor at Indiana University teaching introductory creative writing and composition.
As a writing consultant, I believe the most important thing I can do is ask questions about the intent and direction of the assignment. While addressing mechanical concerns is important, and something I'm wholly confident with, I believe that macro-level issues regarding flow, clarity, and cohesion are more important. The old saying goes, "Why polish a broken a car?"
Aside from writing related issues, I'm very confident in pre-calculus level math. I scored a 30 on the ACT in high school (and a perfect 12 on the writing), and a 160 on the GRE - which translates to 760 on the old scale (and a 163 on the English portion). I scored a 5 on the AP Calculus test and a 4 on the AP Statistics. I also scored a 5 on U.S. History.
HobbiesI like to read and write (poetry in particular). I also enjoy keeping myself active with basketball, tennis, and soccer. I brush my teeth and shower every day, which I guess means I usually smell decent enough.
